A Pair of Neoclassical-Style Wrought-Iron Chairs

A distinctive pair of Mid-Century wrought-iron chairs in Neoclassical style, characterised by their elegant openwork backs and refined ornamental details. Each chair features a gently tapering back composed of slender vertical iron elements, centred by a series of stylised arrow motifs, a defining feature of the design. The back is framed by delicately twisted and ornamental ironwork and surmounted by a softly scalloped upper rail.

The seats are fitted with woven cane, creating a finely patterned surface within a substantial wrought-iron frame. The front apron is articulated by a continuous scalloped decoration, while the slender tubular legs are enriched with turned and ribbed details before terminating in rounded feet.

The dark enamelled finish is complemented by gilt decorative accents, particularly around the arrow motifs and ornamental elements, creating a subtle contrast between the restrained black ironwork and the classical detailing. The combination of geometric structure, symmetry and stylised classical motifs reflects a Mid-Century interpretation of the Neoclassical vocabulary.

The pair retains a distinctive aged patina, with natural variations, surface wear and areas of loss to the dark enamel and gilt decoration, all consistent with age and use. These traces of time contribute to the chairs’ character, depth and authentic decorative appeal.
